Update: Samsung has responded to this, saying that there is no link
between the KitKat update and the non-functional accessories with the
Samsung Galaxy Note 3. According to AllAboutSamsung, here’s what Samsung

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is the latest best device launched by the company, and Samsung has been working on the Android KitKat update for it for the various regions around the world, but although the update is as happy a news for everyone, it comes with a slight disappointment because of the step taken by Samsung to remove the support for the third party accessories to be used with the Note 3. The update carries the “accessory authentication” system which was being rumored earlier.
What does all this mean?
It simply means that Samsung wants people to use the accessories which have got the identification chip embedded in them, and this chip is given by Samsung. This situation is pretty bad right now, because the accessories which don’t have it, won’t work well with the Note 3 which are updated to the latest Android OS right now. There are ways with which you might be make it work, but is there a need? why does Samsung want to create a situation like Apple where users are left with no option but to use the accessories from Samsung itself?
There are workarounds available for this already, like the rooting of the smartphone and then installing the Xposed Framework mod and making it work then, but who as a normal user would want to sit and do all this on their own, voiding the warranty of the device and in the end, keep trying out stuff after paying the huge sums for purchasing it? One more way to do it – as with the Spigen S-View Flip cover which can be still used if you managed to pull off the chip from the official accessory from Samsung and placed it on the cover from Spigen.
It isn’t that there are very few official accessories from Samsung, because the company had announced a big list of Samsung Galaxy S4 accessories which would work with the other high-end Samsung devices too, but what’s with this monopoly? being like Apple might not work with the Android devices, we feel.
For the accessory makers, the way they would be left with, is the licensing of the chips to use on the accessories. Let us see where this is headed to, and if Samsung becomes any flexible with these identification limitations.
